After installing Microsoft Windows Vista and spending time installing and configuring other applications, I decided to use the Microsoft Complete PC Backup utility built in Vista to make a full backup of the system. Much to my surprise, at the end of the process it failed with an error something like:
Cannot perform request, device I/O error: 0x8007045d
I seached the Interent and could not find any answers for this error. One thing led to another and I figured I would try erasing the Shadow Copy on the drive I was trying to backup. To erase all restore points which generate the Shadow copies on the drive, I had to go into the system panel and disable the System Restore service in the "System Protection" tab of System Properties. Unchecking the drives and hitting Apply erases all the shadow copies (restore points).
After that was complete, I tried the backup again and it was successful. It seems something was corrupt in the shadow copy files causing the backup to fail.
If you run into the above error number, you might try clearing restore points!
