I have been tempted to shut off updates on my MS Windows box because I usually have many different applications and windows open most of the time I am using the machine. After an update, the Windows Update manager will popup a window asking if I want to reboot. No, I usually do not and select Restart Later. About 10 minutes later, it asks me again and this cycle continues until I restart the machine.
Yes, it is wise to restart as soon as possible and make sure your system is secure. But, when I say I will restart it later, I do not want to be asked in another 10 minutes.
A fellow member on CodeProject.com mentioned that via a search on the net, had found an answer to fix this issue. I decided to search and found a good answer along with all kinds of other information at Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/sectip/st0506.mspxThe main part to fix this problem is to:
* Click Start / RUN and type "gpedit.msc"
* Navigate to folder:
\Local Computer Policy (top node)
\Computer Configuration
\Adminstrative Templates
\Windows Components
\WInodws Update
* Double click on "re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations"
Make sure it is Enabled and then enter a value in the "minutes" that you wish for the computer to always remind you. I have mine set to 1440 as that is a 24 hour period of time.
There are many more items that the link above will describe. Some handy information in there.
At least now I do not have to worry about being nagged every 10 minutes!
