A few years ago, I moved to the Gillette Mach 3 razor system. There may be similar systems that perform as well or better, but for me it is the Mach 3.
The problem is the cost of the blades, they are over the top! While many may happily pay for the blades and rip through a couple blades or more per month, I manage to get two months or more out of a single blade.
One of the problems that renders a blade unusable is the buildup between the blades. As long as I keep that buildup cleared out, I can usually stretch that use of the blade two months or more. It may not cut as good as a new one, but it does cut good enough, that I can still get a decent shave.
Many razon manufactures design the blades too close together and the are hard to remove the buildup. That is one of the reasons I like the Gillette Mach 3, they seem to space the blades out enough to make it easier to clean along with the back of the blade being open.
To keep them clean, make sure to wash out all buildup every time you use it before you put it away. It only takes one time and the buildup will be hard to remove. You can also keep a can of compressed air (like for cleaning electronics) near by and use it to clean out the blade when you are finished.
