We have tried many store bought cat toys but the ones our cats seem to like the most are the little plastic circles that come off the top of the milk container. They play for hours with these things especially on linoleum or tile floors.

The other cat toy they love is long wide rubber bands. They are big enough they do not try to swallow them but they do worry you when you see them pulling on them ;) So far, bright yellow has been their favorite.
